Your first brickwork enquiry: a practical checklist.

Bricklayers Sydney · Updated 29 October 2026

A useful bricklaying enquiry brings the project and property details together before a conversation about price. You do not need every decision finalised, but a clear description makes it easier for the team to understand what needs building, repairing or assessing. This checklist is a starting point for a Sydney homeowner, builder or property manager preparing that first message.

Explain what the wall or masonry needs to do.

Start with the purpose of the work. Is it part of a new building, a visible extension, a boundary feature, a retaining structure or a local repair? Include the suburb, approximate dimensions and the areas involved. If the project forms part of a larger renovation or building package, identify the person who coordinates the site and the drawing information already available. The same surface area can describe different work when the function, preparation or access changes.

Collect photographs and project information.

Have a wider view of the work area and safe close-up photographs ready. For repairs, explain what you noticed, when it appeared and whether earlier work has been attempted. For new construction, identify the current plans, selected materials and any reports. Tell the team which details are still undecided so assumptions can be discussed openly. Do not climb or approach unstable masonry to obtain photographs; explain that limitation and arrange appropriate assessment.

Describe how the site can be accessed.

Record unloading space, steps, narrow passages and the route for materials. Explain whether the home or premises remains occupied and which finished surfaces need protection. For managed properties, identify the authorised contact and access arrangements. Where removal or excavation is involved, ask how waste will be handled and what making good is included. These practical details help define a work package before anyone compares totals.

Keep the follow-up conversation specific.

Sending the form stores an enquiry for team review. It does not book a crew or guarantee a fixed number of quotes. The team may ask for more information or discuss a site assessment. Before appointing a contractor, check the relevant licence, current insurance and comparable references. Read the written scope, materials, exclusions and terms for the actual work, and clarify how any changes will be agreed.
